The D.Min. is a selective, practice-based doctoral degree for seasoned leaders in Muslim communities. You will:

  •   Explore advanced Islamic thought and practical theology
  •   Collaborate with leaders from diverse faith traditions
  •   Complete a Directed Study Project that addresses a real issue in your community

Final Project: 75–100 page thesis + oral defense

Pre-requisites: M.Div. or equivalent; Master’s in Islamic Leadership or related field

About the Curriculum

The structure of the D.Min. program balances intensive coursework with independent research. During the initial phase (typically the first two years), students undertake advanced seminars that might cover topics like Islamic leadership ethics, theology of community guidance, advanced organizational management, and interfaith relations – all examined through an Islamic ethical lens. These courses involve case studies, peer discussion, and critical reflection on leadership issues encountered in Muslim communities. Candidates are encouraged to draw upon classical sources (for example, works on akhlāq or writings of Islamic scholars on governance) and evaluate how those insights can inform contemporary leadership challenges such as community conflict resolution, institutional development, or public policy engagement.

In the final phase of the program, each candidate carries out an original applied research project as the capstone of their doctoral studies. This project involves identifying a pressing issue or opportunity in the realm of Islamic leadership or community life and systematically investigating it to develop practical insights or improvements. The research culminates in a doctoral thesis (usually around 75–100 pages) that documents the candidate’s methodology, findings, and recommendations for practice. An oral defense of the thesis is then conducted, wherein the candidate must demonstrate mastery of their subject matter and the capacity to critically integrate theory with practice in addressing the chosen issue.

About the Program

The Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.) in Islamic Leadership is a specialized 30-credit terminal degree program (typically completed over three years) that enhances the scholarly and practical capabilities of experienced Muslim leaders. As an advanced applied research degree, the D.Min. focuses on integrating the Islamic intellectual tradition with contemporary leadership and pastoral practice. It is designed for seasoned practitioners—such as imams, chaplains, nonprofit directors, and community organizers—who wish to deepen their engagement with Islamic thought, refine their leadership strategies, and contribute applied research to the field of Muslim community leadership.

The structure of the D.Min. program balances intensive coursework with independent research. In the initial two years, students take advanced seminars in topics like leadership ethics, organizational management, and interfaith relations—all through an Islamic lens. The final phase includes an applied research thesis (75–100 pages) and an oral defense.
